Preface

Concept & Philosophy: An institution by definition, is a creature of its environment. It contributes to the needs of society, both for today & for its tomorrows. During the last century, global society has progressed from being manual to knowledge workers and then moving on to information processors. India’s rapidly changing socio-economic environment, in the wake of liberalization, has facilitated in its emergence as one of the largest consumer societies in the world. Global advancements in communication technology and increased cultural & political interactions have also forced rapid changes in the functioning of the corporate world. We thus live through momentous times. To cater to a more discerning society the communication factor has become critical. We are now compelled to focus our efforts in building integrated communications to meet international requirements. This impetus triggered the creation of DSC & evolution of this comprehensive full-time programme.

Our Mission is to help create a holistic understanding of the Communication Industry and to actively participate in its evolution, challenges and excitement. We aim to create all-round communication practitioners who would attain leadership in their chosen field. Our programme facilitates each ‘student executive’ to evolve according to his/her genius and dreams. To achieve this holistic appreciation the program is structured around thirty two courses in general business, marketing and communication.

The Programme & Methodology: DSC runs a comprehensive two year full-time Post Graduate Diploma Programme in Communication (PGDPC). Today after over a decade, our programme is recognised as amongst the finest in the communication industry in the country.

The academic curriculum comprises twenty one core courses in General Business and three specializations of five/ six courses in Advertising, Marketing and Journalism respectively. The two-year PGDPC programme run by DSC compares favourably with any Masters Programme in Communication in India. The syllabi are comprehensive and updated regularly to embody the state-of-the-art and futuristic tilt for the tomorrows.

In a live programme practice is of essence. Therefore, the methodology we have carefully crafted comprises of lectures, discussions, case studies, films, book presentations, role-plays and practical work. DSC has pioneered a unique concept - that of 'Apprenticeship'. While the mornings are devoted to class (8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.), the afternoon is spent working as a regular apprentice with a leading organisation in the communication industry. Between two semesters the student is also encouraged to work full-time as an intern for over five months in two years, which encompasses areas of Advertising, Creative, Event Marketing, Film Production, Market Research, Media Marketing, Public Relations, and related areas. The cumulative & consolidated work experience facilitates the students to appreciate work ethos, and imbibe appropriate attitudes early in their career. This unique blend of theory and practice, enables a high degree of value enhancement to the students. We remain experimental & experiential in nature and develop learning partnerships through this synergistic approach.

Finally, by the end of the third semester the candidate completes a Thesis in ones area of interest. This original work entails about two hundred hours of work. The Thesis is conceptualized, researched, collated, analysed, and compiled towards original findings that adds to new knowledge to the communication industry. This is a contribution that each student makes to the industry.

The faculty includes professors from within DSC, dedicated visiting professors from industry and academia, researchers and leading practitioners. This achieves the right balance of the think-do continuum. To focus specialised attention on each student and to foster team spirit amongst them we have taken the hard decision to restrict each class size to around 30 students only, in other words 30 schools. This allows for personalised interaction and care. In our specialisation we remain flexible and constantly tailor the programme to suit individual sensitivities, needs, and aspirations.

As testimony to our programme several leading organisations have recruited students from DSC. These include 360?, Airtel, Ambience, BBC, CEAT, Convergys, Corporate Voice Shandwick, Discovery, Euro RSCG, FICCI, Grey Worldwide, HCL, IMRB, Indian Public Affairs Network (IPAN), JWT, LG, LOWE, Madison, Maxus, McCann Erickson, Microsoft, Miditech, Mind-share, Perfect Relations, Rams, SONY TV, STAR TV, Starcom, Tiger Sports Marketing, Voltas, Zee News Network, and other leading organisations.

We invite you to visit us at your convenience. We look forward to our meeting.
